The Program in American Language Studies (PALS) provides superior English language instruction to non-native English speakers for academic, professional, business, and social/acculturation purposes. It strives not only to foster students' language competency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, but also to develop students' cultural understanding of the world at large, and the United States in particular.

    Academic Program

The PALS Intensive English Program provides full-time and part-time English language and cultural instruction at eight proficiency levels (ranging from beginners to advanced). The courses are designed to prepare students for entering higher education or for taking on responsibilities as professionals and community members. The intensive program also serves students who need additional skills in English for their personal or professional use, and for members of the academic community, such as visiting scholars or exchange students.

Each year, instruction is delivered in six sessions. Sessions I-IV are seven weeks long, while Sessions V-VI (summer sessions) are 5 weeks long with additional study hours. In order to provide competencies in reading, writing, listening and speaking, the Intensive program is designed in modular format covering four major disciplines:

    • Reading/Writing
    • Applied Grammar
    • Phonology/Listening
    • Discussion
    • Language Arts

Classes generally meet Monday through Friday, from 8:40 AM to 3:00 PM . (In summer, 8:40 AM - 4:00 PM).

Each student has to take a Placement test in all 4 skills, and a personalized schedule is created. It is possible that a student may be in different levels in different skill areas.

PALS offers TOEFL and GRE preparation courses. TOEFL scores determine the admissibility of students to American universities for higher education. PALS is also an official test center for the new iBT-TOEFL.

Students can enroll in any session. Students must be at least 17 years of age and should have proof of having completed high school education.

    Campus Dormitory and Dining Services:
Dormitory rooms are available to PALS students; however, the allocation of dormitory rooms is made on a first-come first-served basis. Students are advised to request a room as early as possible. All PALS dormitory residents are required to purchase a meal plan from the University Dining Services.

    About the dormitory building:
PALS students are allocated a large, double room and some single rooms in the New Gibbons Residence Hall on Douglass Campus. Neilson Dining Hall, the Douglass College Center and the Douglass Library are also located in this area. Men and women are housed on different floors. All residents have electronic security cards which permit them access to the building from the outside; each resident has a key to unlock his/her room. New Gibbons has common rooms which are shared by all residents for studying and socializing, and it also has a shared kitchen and laundry faacilities.

    About the dormitory room:
Each room has a small refrigerator, microwave and two beds with mattresses; two closets and a dresser for storage; a desk with chair; a mirror; a ceiling light; and data ports. Residents may store small snacks in their rooms. Safety regulations prohibit the use of other cooking appliances in the rooms. You will need to have your own bed sheets (size twin extra-long), blankets, a pillow, towels, a reading lamp, clothes hangers, etc. The University no longer provides land-line telephone service to dorm rooms; you may use your own mobile phone if you prefer. Rooms are heated; residents may bring or buy fans (fans are not expensive to purchase in the USA) to use in the room. Air conditioners are not permitted.
