The Minnesota English Language Program (MELP) helps international students improve English reading, writing, and speaking skills for success in a university classroom or in the workplace.

Taught by exceptional faculty from a world-class university, MELP offers a variety of credit and noncredit courses for students and professionals. Drawing on a wealth of resources from across the University of Minnesota, MELP also offers customizable English as a Second Language (ESL) training to meet the specific language needs of various groups, businesses, and organizations.

    ##Academic English Program – Credit classes for students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate degree programs who are seeking to improve their English language skills while taking other academic course work.

    • International students admitted to the University with a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score below 550 for the paper-based test (PBT) and below 79 for the internet-based test (iBT)
    • Undergraduates, graduate students, and post-doctoral students who want to upgrade their English skills in order to be more effective in their studies, research, and work at the University
    • University employees and other community members

      Classes on English grammar, English reading and composition skills, and English speaking and listening skills (including pronunciation) are available at two levels:

      • Advanced ESL for students with TOEFL scores between 477-517 (PBT) and 53-67 (iBT)
      • Academic ESL for students with TOEFL scores above 517 (PBT) and 67 (iBT)

    ##Intensive English Program – A program designed for students who need to improve their English skills in preparation for study at a University or college, and for those who wish to prepare for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

    Intensive English courses provide language skills development with experiential learning outside the classroom and effective use of advanced computer technology to help you achieve your academic, professional, or personal goals.

    *Tuition is based on a full-time course schedule of 25 hours of instruction per week.

     

    Housing

    Most students arrange their own housing off campus. There are many off-campus housing options. For a list of off-campus housing options, please visit the Housing Web site.

    If you would like to live on-campus in a dormitory, you MUST submit an application and a $25 check/money order with your MELP application by the deadline.

    The deadlines for on-campus housing are:

    • Summer and Fall semesters: May 1
    • Spring semester: November 1

    To be accepted into the program:

    • Show proof of high school graduation
    • Have at least two years of high school-level English
    • Verify funding to cover expenses while you are studying in the United States
    • Fill out a full-time application form for admission and send it to the Minnesota English Language Program (MELP) with:
    • A copy of your high school diploma or college transcript
    • Your signature to verify your source of funding

    Overseas Students

    • The application deadline for each term is seven (7) weeks prior to the start of classes.
    • You are advised to send all application documents at least two (2) months prior to the beginning of the term you intend to enroll in.
