  • MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages : On Line course
  • English as a Second Language

    Individual Courses: All courses may be taken separately or in combinations according to students' personal preferences. (Exception: International students studying under a student visa from The New School are required to take the 18-hour full-time Intensive Study program below.)

    Intensive Study Program: The English Language Studies Center has developed a unique program for intensive study of English as a Second Language. The student consults with an advisor to build a full-time personal curriculum (18 hours per week) based on a selection of courses at an appropriate level.

  • 1. You need the English as a Second Language Application form.

    • Pick up the application form or request from the English Language Studies office or the New School Admissions Office (addresses below).

    2. Your English level must be approved for acceptance to our program.

    • If you are applying from abroad or outside the local area: Return completed ESL Application (with required writing sample for level approval) to New School Admissions Office.
    • If you are in the New York City area: Contact the English Language Studies Office to schedule a placement test. You need to take the placement test to get level approval.

    3. I-20 Application.

    If you are accepted, you will receive an official acceptance letter from New School Admissions and information on how to apply for an I-20 or transfer your I-20. (Note: You can only register for classes after you've received this acceptance letter).

  • Teaching English

    Since 1990, The New School has been training qualified people to teach English as a second/foreign language in this highly regarded program emphasizing communicative, content-based, and student-centered learning. We are pleased to introduce a new five-course non-credit certificate.

    • The New School awards a Certificate in Teaching English (CTE) for successful completion of a structured curriculum of five courses, which includes a minimum of 50 hours of student teaching.
    • Length of Study: The program can be completed in one year (two semesters) full time and must be completed in two years.
    • Cost: Approximately $3,400 (2009-2010 tuition).
    • The CTE is offered for students who hold 60 undergraduate credits.
